Somatic Therapy
Somatic therapy is a scientifically-informed holistic approach developed by several prominent mental health professionals. In somatic therapy, therapists and clients collaboratively draw on the innate wisdom of the body via an awareness of physical sensations, mind-body activities, and talk therapy. This allows clients to address deep emotional issues, regulate the autonomic nervous system, and foster an embodied sense of self.
Somatic therapy posits that when something affects us mentally, the impacts can also be found in the body. Research supports the theory that trauma is stored in the body, and when we reconnect with the body’s wounds and needs, we become more able to process and integrate the negative impacts the distressing experiences have on our lives. Somatic therapy has been shown to be effective for those suffering with chronic pain, anxiety, depression, grief, addiction, and traumatic experiences.
