Prolonged Exposure (PE)
PE is an evidence-based treatment designed specifically to help people suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is a manualized subset of cognitive behavioral therapy. It is also a short-term approach that achieves results quickly, typically requiring between 2-3 months. PE therapists utilize exposure in sessions and help you practice exposure in your life outside of sessions. This allows you to develop the skills to be able to address your trauma independently.
PE is not solely for those with a PTSD diagnosis. There have been numerous studies that showcase its efficacy in helping people who have experienced traumatic events. PE teaches you how to overcome the behavioral and cognitive avoidance that can result from trauma. You learn to process the trauma and organize your thoughts. The approach is individualized to every client and delivered by a therapist who is empathic and attuned to your needs and pacing.
