What inspired you to pursue a career as a psychotherapist?

A culmination of life experiences has inspired me to pursue a career as a therapist. Being a Black woman with several marginalized intersecting identities, I have felt the impact of systems that were not built in my favor. Connecting with members of my community has allowed me to see how mental health is directly impacted by society’s systems. This has inspired me to help promote the liberation of others with diverse identities and to be a supportive and healing presence in their lives.

As a psychotherapist, what part of your job is most satisfying?

The most satisfying part of my job is when a client trusts me enough to disclose things they may be hesitant to share. It reassures me that I am fulfilling my role and providing a safe space for my client. I believe that this is when the therapy process can truly begin.

How would you describe your therapeutic approach?

My therapeutic approach is primarily person-centered. I believe in considering the individual as a whole and working in a non-judgmental manner. I believe that individuals are more than just their problems or diagnoses.

Why do you believe that psychotherapy can help?

I have witnessed psychotherapy helping my family, friends, clients, and myself. Therapy can be incredibly empowering and provide individuals with the tools necessary to lead the life they desire.

What are some of your specialties and what drew you to them?

I utilize a variety of therapeutic techniques from different modalities. Philosophically, I am drawn to person-centered and feminist theories. The liberation aspect of my approach incorporates narrative therapy, which allows clients to have autonomy and control over their own stories. Additionally, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) offer unique tools to assist clients in managing their life challenges.

What is one thing about psychotherapy you wish everyone knew?

Therapy comes in many different flavors. The media often portrays therapy in a certain way, but in reality, there are numerous unique types of therapies and therapists that exist. If one approach doesn’t work, keep exploring because there is so much more to uncover.

What is your motto or personal mantra?

My mantra is ‘This too shall pass.’ I have this phrase tattooed on my body as a reminder that pain is temporary and that better times are ahead.

What are your favorite self-care activities?

I enjoy painting canvases, furniture, and miniature figurines, playing video games, and caring for animals.
